Keep Them Smiling: Keeping Your Team Happy on a Budget
The best way to keep your team productive is to keep them happy. While the UK’s productivity problem still lingers, there are some steps you can take to keep your workplace running happily and efficiently. This isn’t to say you can force your teams to be happy all the time, dismissing valid concerns and creating a toxic positivity culture won’t help. There are steps you can take to keep your team smiling, at least most of the time.
A lot of big businesses will offer their employees perks, and sometimes those perks can be costly. For small business, this isn’t always an option. That doesn’t mean you can’t offer some simple perks that don’t really come at a cost for you (they may even save you money in the long run), that will make the lives of your team a bit easier and happier. Let’s take a look at some perks that won’t cost the earth…
Remote Working
This is by far the easiest and most cost-effective option for you. There’s no reason it’s such a popular option. Allowing employees to work remotely means they don’t need to focus on office perks, and can instead focus on the perks of their own home.
Reduced office use will not only be better for your own wallet and peace of mind. Studies have shown that remote working improves employee happiness, promoting a healthier approach to work, improving productivity and overall feelings of wellbeing.
Reminders of Worth
Make sure your employees are aware of how much they’re worth to your business. Individuals can begin to feel lost in the midst of your business’ growth if they can’t see the impact of their work. This can lead to a lost employee if it sparks feelings of disillusionment.
Remind your team that their efforts are working, not just as a whole but as individuals – set a small amount of time to speak to each person. By using your bespoke CRM to build reports, you can show your team how their individual efforts are helping with your overall goal. If your team feels fulfilled and valued, they’ll be happy.
Team Bonding
Yes, everyone’s here to work, but that doesn’t mean your team can’t blow off a little steam once in a while. Encourage team bonding both in and out of the office – post-work drinks or meals would be one great way to get the team together and talking. In the office, encourage your team to collaborate with one another. They’ve all got different jobs but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be encouraged to help each other.
Take Feedback
Happy teams feel listened to, and the best way to make your team feel listened to is to ask for feedback and attempt to implement it (where possible). The last thing you want is for your team to feel that they can’t give that feedback, so if you are concerned you can offer the option for that feedback to be anonymous. And again, you need to make some attempt to implement or show that you’ve at least taken on board that feedback – if not it could seem like you’re not taking concerns seriously or not willing to listen, which is arguably worse than not taking feedback in the first place.
The Right Tools
There’s nothing more stressful than trying to do your best without the appropriate tools for the job. If your team doesn’t have what they need to do the jobs you’re asking of them, moral is going to sink very quickly.
